¹⁸ In that day^(A) five cities^(B) in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance^(C) to the Lord Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.^[a](D)

¹⁹ In that day^(E) there will be an altar^(F) to the Lord in the heart of Egypt,^(G) and a monument^(H) to the Lord at its border. ²⁰ It will be a sign and witness^(I) to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior^(J) and defender, and he will rescue^(K) them. ²¹ So the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge^(L) the Lord. They will worship^(M) with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the Lord and keep them.^{(N) 22} The Lord will strike^(O) Egypt with a plague;^(P) he will strike them and heal them. They will turn^(Q) to the Lord, and he will respond to their pleas and heal^(R) them.

²³ In that day^(S) there will be a highway^(T) from Egypt to Assyria.^(U) The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship^(V) together. ²⁴ In that day^(W) Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,^(X) a blessing^[b](Y) on the earth. ²⁵ The Lord Almighty will bless^(Z) them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people,^(AA) Assyria my handiwork,^(AB) and Israel my inheritance.^(AC)”

A Lamp on a Stand

²¹ He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?^{(A) 22} For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.^{(B) 23} If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”^(C)

²⁴ “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.^{(D) 25} Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”^(E)

The Parable of the Growing Seed

²⁶ He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.^(F) A man scatters seed on the ground. ²⁷ Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. ²⁸ All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. ²⁹ As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”^(G)

The Parable of the Mustard Seed^(H)

³⁰ Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,^(I) or what parable shall we use to describe it? ³¹ It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. ³² Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

³³ With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.^{(J) 34} He did not say anything to them without using a parable.^(K) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Jesus Calms the Storm^(L)

³⁵ That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” ³⁶ Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.^(M) There were also other boats with him. ³⁷ A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. ³⁸ Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

³⁹ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

⁴⁰ He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”^(N)

⁴¹ They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign^(A) appeared in heaven:^(B) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars^(C) on her head. ² She was pregnant and cried out in pain^(D) as she was about to give birth. ³ Then another sign appeared in heaven:^(E) an enormous red dragon^(F) with seven heads^(G) and ten horns^(H) and seven crowns^(I) on its heads. ⁴ Its tail swept a third^(J) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.^(K) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child^(L) the moment he was born. ⁵ She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”^[a](M) And her child was snatched up^(N) to God and to his throne. ⁶ The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.^(O)

⁷ Then war broke out in heaven. Michael^(P) and his angels fought against the dragon,^(Q) and the dragon and his angels^(R) fought back. ⁸ But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. ⁹ The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent^(S) called the devil,^(T) or Satan,^(U) who leads the whole world astray.^(V) He was hurled to the earth,^(W) and his angels with him.

¹⁰ Then I heard a loud voice in heaven^(X) say:

¹³ When the dragon^(AH) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.^{(AI) 14} The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,^(AJ) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,^(AK) out of the serpent’s reach. ¹⁵ Then from his mouth the serpent^(AL) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. ¹⁶ But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. ¹⁷ Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war^(AM) against the rest of her offspring^(AN)—those who keep God’s commands^(AO) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.^(AP)
